Anvaya

[एकेन] पदा अदीनस्त्त्वं तुषाराद्रिम्, इतरेण अन्ध्रान् पौण्ड्रान् [च] मृद्नन्तम्, चीनावनौ पह्नवभूमिखण्डे [च] उग्रं करवालं प्रसारयन्तम् [असुरमेकं ददर्श]।

Meaning

[एकेन] पदा - [ekena] padā - (with one) foot; अदीनस्त्त्वं - adīnasttvaṁ - invincible; तुषाराद्रिम् - tuṣārādrim - Himalaya; इतरेण - itareṇa - with the other; अन्ध्रान् - andhrān - Andhra; पौण्ड्रान् - pauṇḍrān - Paundra; मृद्नन्तम् - mṛdnantam - oppressing; चीनावनौ - cīnāvanau - over China; पह्नवभूमिखण्डे - pahnavabhūmikhaṇḍe - the land of the Pahlavas (Persia); उग्रं - ugraṁ - harsh; करवालं - karavālaṁ - sword; प्रसारयन्तम् - prasārayantam - brandished;

Sanskrit

एकेन पादेन उदारात्म-हिमालयम् अन्येन आन्ध्रदेशं पौण्ड्रजनपदं च निष्पीडयन् सः चीनभूमौ पारस्यदेशे च उग्रं करवालं भ्रामयति स्म।

English Interpretation

Oppressing with one foot the invincible Himalaya, with the other the plains of Andhra and Paundra, he brandished a harsh sword over China and the land of the Pahlavas (Persia).

English Interpretation

Then did I see a lordly Titan; crowned, gigantic, bearing a thunderbolt, feeding the hordes of his offspring with the tears of the Mother mixed with a hundred streams of her blood.

Swaraj Amrit Mahotsav : Homage to Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar


Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar CIE (26 September 1820 – 29 July 1891) was one of the pillars of Bengal renaissance who managed to continue the social reforms movement that was started by Raja Rammohan Roy in the early 1800s. Vidyasagar was a well-known writer, intellectual and above all a staunch supporter of humanity. He had an imposing personality and was revered even by the British authorities of his time. He brought about a revolution in the Bengali education system and refined the way Bengali language was written and taught. His book, 'Borno Porichoy' (Introduction to the letter), is still used as the introductory text to learn Bengali alphabets. The title 'Vidyasagar' (ocean of knowledge) was given to him due to his vast knowledge in several subjects. Poet Michael Madhusudan Dutta while writing about Ishwar Chandra said: "The genius and wisdom of an ancient sage, the energy of an Englishman and the heart of a Bengali mother".

Early Life and Education

Ishwar Chandra Bandopadhyaya was born in Birsingha village of Midnapore district in Bengal on September 26, 1820. His father, Thakurdas Bandyopadhyay and mother Bhagavati Devi were very religious persons. The economic condition of the family was not well so Ishwar had to spend his childhood amidst scarcity of basic resources. Amidst all this, Ishwar Chandra was an obstinate boy with a brilliant mind and he focused his obstinacy in his studies. He learned the basics of Sanskrit at the village pathahaala after which he set out for Calcutta with his father in 1826. There are several myths regarding his brilliance and dedication as a student. It is said that Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar learned English numerals by following the mile-stones labels on his way to Calcutta. His father Thakurdas stayed at Burrabazar area in Calcutta along with his sons and money was scarce so Ishwar Chandra used to help in household chores after school hours, and at night he used to study under the gas lit street lamps to save oil for cooking the next day.

He breezed through his lessons and cleared all the necessary exams. He learned Vedanta, Vyakaran, Literature, Rhetoric's, Smriti and Ethics in Sanskrit College during 1829 to 1841. He earned regular scholarships and later took up a teaching position in a school in Jorasanko to support his family's financial condition. He took part in a competition testing knowledge in Sanskrit in 1839 and earned the title of 'Vidyasagar' meaning Ocean of Knowledge. The same year Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar successfully cleared his Law examination. Vidyasagar got married at the age of fourteen to Dinamani Devi and the couple had a son named Naraya Chandra.

In 1841, at the age of twenty one, Ishwar Chandra joined the Fort William College as the Head Pandit in the Sanskrit department. The brilliant mind that he was, he soon became proficient in English and Hindi. After five years, in 1946, Vidyasagar left Fort William College and joined the Sanskrit College as 'Assistant Secretary'. But just after a year he entered into a serious altercation with the College Secretary, Rasomoy Dutta, over administrative changes he recommended. Since Vidyasagar was not someone who would bow down to power, he resigned from the post on being refused by the college authorities and resumed employment at Fort William College but as a head clerk. He came back to Sanskrit College as a Professor on the request of the college authorities but imposed a condition that he be allowed to redesign the system. He became Principal of Sanskrit College in 1851. In 1855, he assumed the responsibilities as a special inspector of schools with additional charges and travelled to remote villages in Bengal to oversee the quality of education.

Educational Reforms

Vidyasagar is credited with the role of thoroughly remodelling the medieval scholastic system prevailing in Sanskrit College and bring about modern insights into the education system. The first change that Vidyasagar made when he came back to the Sanskrit College as a Professor was to include English and Bengali as the medium of learning, besides Sanskrit. He introduced courses of European History, Philosophy and Science alongside of Vedic scriptures. He encouraged students to pursue these subjects and take away the best from both worlds. He also changed the rules of admission for students in Sanskrit College allowing non-Brahmin students to enrol in the prestigious institution. He wrote two books 'Upakramonika' and 'Byakaran Koumudi', interpreting complex notions of Sanskrit grammar in easy legible Bengali language. He introduced the concepts of Admission fee and tuition fee for the first time in Calcutta. He set up the Normal School for training teachers enabling uniformity in teaching methods. Through his contacts at the deputy magistrate's office he would help his students get jobs in government offices.

He was an ardent advocate of women education. He rightly viewed education as the primary way for women to achieve emancipation from all the societal oppression they had to face at that time. He exercised his power and lobbied hard for the opening of school for girls and even outlined suitable curriculum that not only did educate them, but also enabled them to be self-reliant through vocations like needlework. He went door to door, requesting heads of families to allow their daughters to be enrolled in schools. He opened 35 schools for women throughout Bengal and was successful in enrolling 1300 students. He even initiated Nari Siksha Bhandar, a fund to lend support for the cause. He maintained his support to John Elliot Drinkwater Bethune to establish the first permanent girls' school in India, the Bethune School, on May 7, 1849.

He disseminated his ideals through regular articles he wrote for periodicals and newspapers. He was associated with prestigious journalistic publications like 'Tattwabodhini Patrika', 'Somprakash', 'Sarbashubhankari Patrika' and 'Hindu Patriot'. He wrote a number of books that hold primary importance in Bengali culture. His lasting legacy remains with 'Borno Porichoy', an elementary level book for learning Bengali alphabets, where he reconstructed Bengali alphabets and reformed it into typography of 12 vowels and 40 consonants. He established the Sanskrit Press with an aim to produce printed books at affordable prices so that common people could buy them.

Social Reforms

Vidyasagar was always vocal about the oppression that the society inflicted on women at that time. He was very close to his mother who was a woman of great character, who directed him once to do something to alleviate the pain and helplessness of Hindu widows, who were forced to live a life of abnegation. They were denied basic pleasures of life, marginalised in society, often exploited unfairly and treated as a burden by their family. Vidyasagar's compassionate heart could not take their plight and he made it his mission to improve the quality of life for these helpless women. He faced raging opposition from orthodox society which termed the concept as something heretic. He challenged the Brahminical authorities and proved that widow remarriage is sanctioned by Vedic scriptures. He took his arguments to the British Authorities and his pleas were heard when the Hindu Widows' Remarriage Act, 1856 or Act XV, 1856, was decreed on July 26, 1856. He did not just stop there. He initiated several matches for child or adolescent widows within respectable families and even married his son Narayan Chandra to an adolescent widow in 1870 to set an example.

Character and Altruism

Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar was a man of contradicting characters. He was an obstinate man who defined his own path of action. He was never swayed by others' insistence or arguments and took decisions based on his own judgement. He was a man with exceptional strength of character and did not tolerate jibes at his own self-respect. He held his own against high ranking British officials often making them see the errors of their discriminatory ways. He was not used to taking nonsense from anyone and implemented that obstinate quality in constructive ways to improve the Bengali society from within. Unshakable courage was the mettle of his success in introducing the Widow Remarriage Act in 1856.

On the other hand, he had a soft heart that melted into empathy for other's plight. He was easily moved to tears when he saw someone in pain and was always the first person to offer his help to colleagues and friends in distress. He spent most of his salary to pay for the expenses of poor students. He felt the pain of the child and adolescent widows around him and dedicated his all to lessen their predicament. He helped revered Bengali poet Michael Madhusudan Dutt to relocate from France to England and study for the bar. He also facilitated his return to India and inspired him to write poetry in Bengali creating some of the most legendary literary works in the language. Michael Madhusudan gave him the epithet 'Daya Sagar' (ocean of generosity) for his selfless altruism.

Swaraj Amrit Mahotsav : Homage to Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya Ji


"It is essential that we think about 'Our National Identity' without which there is no meaning of 'Independence".

Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya was born on Monday September 25, 1916, (Ashwin Krishna Trayodashi, Samvat 1973) in the sacred region of Brij in the village of Nagla Chandraban in Mathura District. His full name was Deendayal Upadhyaya, but he was called Deena by the family. His mother Shrimati Rampyari was a religious-minded lady and his father, Shri Bhagwati Prasad, was Assistant Station Master at Jalesar. His great-grandfather, Pandit Hariram Upadhyaya was
a well known astrologer. An astrologer who studied his horoscope predicted that the boy would become a great scholar and thinker, a selfless worker, and a leading politician - but that he would not marry. After his birth, two years later, his mother Shrimati Rampyari gave birth to her second son, Shivdayal. He lost his father Shri Bhagwati Prasad when he was less than three years old and his mother before he was eight.

Two years after his mother, Shrimati Rampyari's death, her father Shri Chunnilal, who was bringing up her two sons to his village Gud Ki Mandhai, near Fatehpur Sikri in Agra District, as a legacy of his dead daughter, also passed away in September 1926. Deendayalji was in his tenth year at that time. He was thus bereft the love and affection of both his parents and his maternal grandfather. He started living with his maternal uncle. Deendayal's aunt was sensitive to the feelings of two brothers; she brought them up like her own children. She became a surrogate mother to the orphans. The ten year old Deendayalji became a guardian for his younger brother at that tender age; he looked after him and took care of all his needs. When he was in the ninth class and in his eighteenth year, his younger brother Shivdayal contracted smallpox. Deendayalji tried his best to save Shivdayal's life by providing him all manner of treatment available at that time, but Shivdayal also died on Nov. 18, 1934. Deendayalji was thus left all alone in this world.

He later went to high school in Sikar. Maharaja of Sikar gave Pandit ji a gold medal, Rs. 250 for books and a monthly scholarship of Rs.10. Pandit ji passed his Intermediate exams with distinction in Pilani and left to Kanpur to pursue his B.A. and joined the Sanatan Dharma College. At the instance of his friend Shri. Balwant Mahashabde, he joined the RSS in 1937. In 1937 he received his B.A. in the first division. Pandit ji moved to Agra to pursue M.A.

Here he joined forces with Shri Nanaji Deshmukh and Shri Bhau Jugade for RSS activities. Around this time Rama Devi, a cousin of Deendayalji fell ill and she moved to Agra for treatment. She passed away. Deendayalji was very depressed and could not take the M.A. exams. His scholarships, received earlier from Maharajaj of Sikar and Shri. Birla were discontinued.

At the instance of his aunt he took a Government conducted competitive examination in dhoti and kurta with a cap on his head, while other candidates wore western suits. The candidates in fun called him "Panditji" - an appellation millions were to use with respect and love in later years. Again at this exam he topped the list of selectees. Armed with his Uncle's permission he moved to Prayag to pursue B.T. and at Prayag he continued his RSS activites. After completion of his B.T., he worked full-time for the RSS and moved to Lakhimpur District in UP as an organizer and in 1955 became the Provincial Organizer of the RSS in UP.

He established the publishing house 'Rashtra Dharma Prakashan' in Lucknow and launched the monthly magazine 'Rashtra Dharma' to propound the principles he held sacred. Later he launched the weekly 'Panchjanya' and still later the daily 'Swadesh'. In 1950, Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee, then Minister at the Center, opposed the Nehru-Liaquat pact and resigned his Cabinet post and joined the opposition to build a common front of democratic forces. Dr.Mookerjee sought Shri. Guruji's help in organizing dedicated young men to pursue the work at the political level.

Pandit Deendayalji convened on September 21, 1951 a political convention of UP and founded the state unit of the new party, Bharatiya Jana Sangh. Pandit Deendayalji was the moving spirit and Dr. Mookerjee presided over the first all-India convention held on October 21, 1951.

Pandit Deendayalji's organizing skills were unmatched. Finally came the red letter day in the annals of the Jana Sangh when this utterly unassuming leader of the party was raised to the high position of President in the year 1968. On assuming this tremendous responsibility Deendayalji went to the South with the message of Jana Sangh. The following rousing call he gave to the thousands of delegates in the Calicut session, still rings in their ears:'

We are pledged to the service not of any particular community or section but of the entire nation. Every countryman is blood of our blood and flesh of our flesh. We shall make Mother India Sujala, Suphala (overflowing with water and laden with fruits) in the real sense of these words. As Dashapraharana Dharini Durga (Goddess Durga with her 10 weapons) she would be able to vanquish evil; as Lakshmi she would be able to disburse prosperity all over and as Saraswati she would dispel the gloom of ignorance and spread the radiance of knowledge all around her. With faith in ultimate victory, let us dedicate ourselves to this task.'

Anvaya

रात्रौ इमानि वाक्यानि निशम्य, तिमिरे भीमं तेजः विलोक्य च [मम] चित्तं ननर्त, [अहम्] आशु सद्म विहाय भोगान् विनिर्धूय च निर्जगाम।

Meaning

रात्रौ - rātrau - in the night; इमानि - imāni - these; वाक्यानि - vākyāni - words; निशम्य - niśamya - hearing; तिमिरे - timire - in the darkness; भीमं - bhīmaṁ - dreadful; तेजः - tejaḥ - splendour; विलोक्य च - vilokya - and beholding; चित्तं - cittaṁ - heart; ननर्त - nanarta - danced; आशु - āśu - quickly; सद्म - sadma - house; विहाय - vihāya - leaving; भोगान् - bhogān - pleasures; विनिर्धूय च - vinirdhūya ca - and shaking off; निर्जगाम - nirjagāma - I went forth;

English Interpretation

Hearing these words in the night and beholding in the darkness a dreadful splendour, my heart danced and leaving my house, shaking off my pleasures, I quickly went forth.

Anvaya

भारतानां सनातनानि कुलानि युद्धाय आह्वय। जयः अस्तु। मा भैः। भोः ! [अहं] जागृता अस्मि। क्व धनुः ? क्व खड्गः ? [भोः] !सुप्तसिंहाः ! उत्तिष्ठत, उत्तिष्ठत।

Meaning

भारतानां - bhāratānāṁ - of the Bharatas; सनातनानि - sanātanāni - ancient; कुलानि - kulāni - tribes; युद्धाय - yuddhāya - to battle; आह्वय - āhvaya - summon forth; जयः - jayaḥ - victory; अस्तु - astu - let there be; मा भैः - - fear not; भोः! - bhoḥ - Oh!; जागृता - jāgṛtā - awakened; अस्मि - asmi - I am/I have; क्व? - kva - where?; धनुः - dhanuḥ - the bow; क्व? - kva - where?; खड्गः? - khaḍgaḥ - the sword; सुप्तसिंहाः - suptasiṁhāḥ - sleeping lions; उत्तिष्ठत उत्तिष्ठत - uttiṣṭhata uttiṣṭhata - arise, arise;

English Interpretation

Summon forth to battle the ancient tribes of the Bharatas. Let there be victory; fear not. Lo, I have awakened! Where is the bow, where the sword? Arise, arise, O sleeping lions!"31

Anvaya

[हे] कवे ! [हे] विलासिन् ! [हे] पुत्र ! मातृवाक्यं शृणु। कालीम्, करालीं चण्डीं भज। आजिमध्ये भृशम् अरातीन् ध्नतीं तां भारतमातरं [त्वं] वै द्रष्टासि।

Meaning

कवे! - kave - poet; विलासिन्! - vilāsin - lover; पुत्र! - putra - son; मातृवाक्यं - mātṛvākyaṁ - the word of the Mother; शृणु - śṛṇu - hear; कालीम् - kālīm - Kali; करालीं - karālīṁ - terrifying; चण्डीं - caṇḍīṁ - Ca??i; भज - bhaja - revere; आजिमध्ये - ājimadhye - in the midst of battle; भृशम् - bhṛśam - violently; अरातीन् - arātīn - enemies; घ्नतीं - ghnatīṁ - killing; तां - tāṁ - Her; भारतमातरं - bhāratamātaraṁ - the mother of the Bharatas; वै - vai - indeed; द्रष्टासि - draṣṭāsi - you shall see;

English Interpretation

O poet and sensualist, hear the word of the Mother: adore Kali the Terrible, my son, the fierce Chandi. Verily you shall see her, the mother of the Bharatas, striking down her foes mightily in the thick of the fight.

काली विकराली चंडी की पूजा कर,

[भोः] आर्याः ! किं बिभ्यत ? अस्मिन् रुधिरस्य सिन्धौ निमज्जत, आर्यसत्त्वाः भवत। भोः ! तत्र पारे हि इदम् अभिन्नतेजः, त्रिशूलि ज्योतिः उदेति। पश्यत।

Meaning

आर्याः! - āryāḥ - Aryans!; किं? - kiṁ - what; बिभ्यत - bibhyata - do you fear; अस्मिन् - asmin - into this; रुधिरस्य - rudhirasya - of blood; सिन्धौ - sindhau - sea; निमज्जत - nimajjata - plunge; आर्यसत्त्वाः - āryasattvāḥ - true Aryans; भवत - bhavata - become; भोः! - bhoḥ - Oh!; तत्र - tatra - there; पारे - pāre - on the opposite shore; हि - hi - (for emphasis); इदम् - idam - a/this; अभिन्नतेजः - abhinnatejaḥ - perfect brilliance; त्रिशूलि - triśūli - trident; ज्योतिः - jyotiḥ - shining; उदेति - udeti - rises; पश्यत - paśyata - see;

भो आर्याः ! कस्मात् बिभीथ ? अस्मिन् रक्तसिन्धौ निमज्जनं कुरुत, आर्यसत्त्वाः भवत। भोः ! तत्र सागरस्य पारे त्रिशूलधारि, दुर्धर्षं ज्योतिः उदेति। तत् पश्यत।

English Interpretation

Whom do you fear, O Aryans? Plunge into this sea of blood; show that you are made of Aryan stuff indeed! Lo, there on the further shore see a light arise, inviolable in brilliance and armed with the trident.

इस रक्तसिन्धु में अवगाहन कर
आर्यसत्व बनकर दिखलाओ,

येषां [राष्ट्राणां] महान्तः, प्रमुखाः शूराः कुलार्थे सदा एव आत्मबलिप्रवृत्ताः [तेषां] प्रजानाम् [अर्थे] कराली सौम्या भवति, [तासां] रक्तेन पुष्टा शत्रून् विनिहन्ति।

Meaning

येषां - yeṣāṁ - wheresover; महान्तः - mahāntaḥ - great; प्रमुखाः - pramukhāḥ - leaders; शूराः - śūrāḥ - heroes; कुलार्थे - kulārthe - for the good of their race; सदा - sadā - continual; एव - eva - (for emphasis); आत्मबलिप्रवृत्ताः - ātmabalipravṛttāḥ - engaged in self sacrifice; प्रजानाम् - prajānām - towards those nations; कराली - karālī - Kali; सौम्या - saumyā - gracious; भवति - bhavati - grow; रक्तेन - raktena - with blood; पुष्टा - puṣṭā - nourished; शत्रून् - śatrūn - enemies; विनिहन्ति - vinihanti - she crushes;

यस्य राष्ट्रस्य महान्तः प्रधान-वीराः स्वदेशस्य अर्थे आत्मबलिं दातुम् अद्यताः तस्य राष्ट्रस्य प्रजाभ्यः काली सौम्या भवति। तासां रक्तेन पुष्टा सा शत्रून् विनाशयति।

English Interpretation

Wheresoever are great heroes and leaders engaged in continual self-sacrifice for the good of their race, towards those nations does Kali grow gracious, nourished with blood, and thus she crushes their enemies.

देश पर कुर्बान होने को जो
राजन्य जो तैयार रहते हैं हमेशा,
यह कराली सौम्य है उनके लिये

रक्तप्रवाहैः - अजानां शतैः, सहस्रैः, अयुतैः अपि [अहं] तृप्ता न अस्मि। हृदयानि भित्त्वा रक्तं प्रदत्त। [तज्ज्ञाः] एवम् अजां करालीं सम्पूजयन्ति।

Meaning

रक्तप्रवाहैः - raktapravāhaiḥ - by torrents of blood; अजानां - ajānāṁ - of goats; शतैः - śataiḥ - from hundreds; सहस्रैः - sahasraiḥ - from thousands; अयुतैः - ayutaiḥ - from tens of thousands; अपि - api - even/and; तृप्ता - tṛptā - satisfied; न अस्मि - na - I am not; हृदयानि - hṛdayāni - hearts; भित्त्वा - bhittvā - opening/having opened; रक्तं - raktaṁ - blood; प्रदत्त - pradatta - offer; एवम् - evam - in this way/thus; अजां - ajāṁ - unborn; करालीं - karālīṁ - terrifying; सम्पूजयन्ति - sampūjayanti - they worship;

Sanskrit

शतशः, सहस्रशः अयुतशः वा छागाः बलीक्रियन्ते चेत् तेषां रक्तप्रवाहैः अहं तृप्ता न भविष्यामि। स्वहृदयानि भित्त्वा रक्तं प्रदत्त। इत्थम् एव शाश्वत-भयङ्कर-जनन्याः पूजा भवति।

English Interpretation

Not by torrents of blood from hundreds and thousands and tens of thousands of goats am I satisfied. Break open your hearts and offer that blood to me, for so do they worship the unborn and dreadful Goddess.

नहीं तृप्त मैं इन सैकड़ों,हजारों,अरबों
पशुबलियों की रक्तधार से,
हृदय भेद कर मुझे रुधिर दो,

देहि, क्रतून् देहि। [अहं] पिपासुः अस्मि। दृष्ट्वा [मां] जानीहि। आद्यां शक्तिं भज। महतां राज्ञां शिरांसि तनूः च भोक्तुं नदन्ती काली इह चरति।

Meaning

English Interpretation

Offer sacrifice to me; give, for I am thirsty. Seeing me, know and adore the original Power, ranging here as Kali who roars aloud and hungers to enjoy the heads and bodies of mighty rulers.

हो शहीद मुझ पर बलि जाओ,
मैं प्यासी हूँ,मुझे रक्त दो,

Bhavani Bharati by Sri Aurobindo
Bhavani Bharati is Sri Aurobindo's only poem in Sanskrit, written between 1904 and 1908. It has 99 verses mostly in the "Upajati" metre which is an apt choice for emoting heroism, power, anger, war. Confiscated by the Calcutta Police, this piece was rediscovered in 1985. The poem depicts the victory of the Shakti, the Mother of the nation, over Ignorance and Evil.
