CHRONOLOGY OF THE

VIVEKANANDA ROCK MEMORIAL

All India Committee's Application

Madras,

23rd November, 1962

The Chief Minister,

Madras State,

Madras.

Sir,

Ref. : Application dated 19-9-1962 by the District Committee of Kanyakumari requesting permission to build Memorial on the Vivekananda Rock - request favourable consideration at an early date.

The Vivekananda Centenary Celebration Committee of Kanyakumari District has sent an application to you, requesting permission to erect a statue of Swami Vivekananda on the Vivekananda Rock at Kanyakumari and to construct a footbridge from shore to the rock for an easy access to it, on 19-9-1962 by registered post, the receipt of which has also been acknowledged to our Nagercoil District Office. Subsequently, in the last week of September, Swami Shuddha Satvananda, Manager, Ramakrishna Math, Madras, Shri M. Nanjappa, Treasurer of our All India Committee, had met you personally and requested about the same matter. On behalf of the All India Committee formed for the above purpose, I most humbly request you to consider the application favourably and give us the necessary permission at an early date. Our Committee proposes to lay the foundation stone of the above Memorial on the 17th of January 1963) which is the 100th birthday of Swami Vivekananda. We have to contact many people for the above purpose and the time at our disposal being very short, we shall be highly obliged if you grant us the permission at an early date.

We are glad to state that the necessary funds to start the construction of the Memorial has already been collected. His Highness the Maharaja of Kashmir has sent his most gracious donation for the above purpose.

We had also requested the Devaswom Board of the Kanyakumari District to give us their consent for the construction of the above memorial. They have sent us an order on 10-10-1962 consenting to our request and a copy of their typed order is being attached herewith. You are already aware of the keen interest which all of us have in the proposed Memorial at Kanyakumari. The All India Ramakrishna Mission also wishes that the above said Memorial be completed before January, 1964. We most humbly request you to consider the application of our Kanyakumari District Committee favourably and grant us the necessary permission which will enable us to proceed with the work at an early date.

Thanking you in anticipation,

Yours faithfully,

Sd-/ P. Mahadevan

Secretary ALL INDIA COMMITTEE
