Hard Work and Intense Sadhana

Patanjali listed nine obstacles to spiritual life: disease, laziness, doubt, lack of enthusiasm, lethargy, clinging to sense enjoyment, false perception, difficulty attaining concentration, and difficulty maintaining concentration. All seekers face those obstacles to some degree in their spiritual journey, even Holy Mother. She said: "One should shun laziness and practise japa and meditation regularly. Once in Dakshineswar I was unwell and did not get up at three o'clock. I felt lethargic. The next day I got up even later. This happened on several successive days. Gradually I felt that I no longer had the inclination to get up early. At once I realized that it was a trick of the mind and that laziness had possessed me. I then forced myself to get up at the usual time and resumed my previous habit. One cannot succeed in spiritual life without firm determination."

Later, one day Holy Mother said to her niece Nalini: "When I was your age, I worked very hard - and in spite of that, I used to repeat the mantra 100,000 times every day.
