Big Heart and Great Understanding

Golap-ma was a simple and guileless woman who had lost her husband and only daughter, and she came to Ramakrishna for consolation. After a few visits, the Master introduced Golap-ma to Holy Mother, saying: "You should feed this brahmin girl well. Sorrow is assuaged when the stomach is full." The Master knew that when he was gone Holy Mother would need a companion. One day he talked to Holy Mother about Golap-ma: "Keep your eye on this brahmin woman. She will live with you permanently." Golap-ma began to stay with Holy Mother in the nahabat from time to time.

During one of Golap-ma's visits the Master asked her to bring him the food that Holy Mother had cooked at the nahabat. After that she carried his food to his room every day. This meant that Holy Mother could no longer see the Master at mealtimes as she was used to. In addition, in the evenings Golap-ma would spend long hours in the Master's room, and Holy Mother had to wait with Golap-ma's supper, sometimes until 10 o'clock at night. When the Master realized Holy Mother's inconvenience, he asked Golap-ma not to stay in his room so long. But Golap-ma did not understand. She said: "No, no. Mother loves me very much and regards me as her own daughter. She calls me by my first name."

Although Holy Mother was deprived of visiting the Master for some time, she nonetheless allowed others to serve him. She maintained a low profile so that the jealous women who used to visit him would have no chance to criticize her.
