In my young days, when I was learning swimming, I did not learn swimming in the normal way, because there was great opposition in the house. Family members were told by some astrologers that I should never go near water, because in my Kundali (horoscope) it was said that it was dangerous for me. So all my friends used to go to learn swimming in swimming tank, but I was denied. Then I found out my own way to learn. But then because I could not learn the normal way as others do so I was not confident about jumping into well. I could enter into the well and swim. But that jumping business I was not conversant with. In Nagpur there are very deep wells, big wells but deep wells.
There is some charm in jumping in the deep wells. So I thought that I must know this art and I must also be able to jump. But deep down below, some fifty feet below in well what will happen if I hit? So, little fear was also there. But then when I was finding that people are jumping, very nicely jumping and nothing happens to them. Every day I thought I shall do it. I shall jump into the well from the top. But every day I returned without doing it. One day I said, ‘Today I shall do it’. My friends were there. I told them you be the first, second, third and fourth and I shall be the fifth one to jump. I will be at five. They agreed. The first boy went and jumped; the second boy went and jumped; third boy went and jumped, fourth boy went and jumped, then I also jumped. And I found nothing has happened to me and then of course I became very fond of jumping.
The question is this experience, this idea that well if A can do it, B can do it, how is it that I cannot do it? I also belong to the same species. So I should also be able to do it. So while deciding about higher things in life, if this confidence is there, this basic confidence that well, if ordinary people can do it, well, I also can do it and then one does it. Well, if somebody has done it then I also can do it. So with this confidence one has to formulate the higher plan of life. The question of how I can do it whether I shall fail should not rise. Well you may fail; but you again rise up, what is there? You cannot achieve a thing in first trial.
You may do it in a second trial; you may do it in third trial. You may have ten trials. After all a child hundred times it falls. But again and again it rises and ultimately learns to walk. Not just walk but it runs. Nobody blocks the child’s growth. So with this confidence one has to think of higher things and fashion our life accordingly.

Freed from attachment, non-egoistic, endowed with courage and enthusiasm and unperturbed by success or failure, the worker is known as a pure (Sattvika) one. Four outstanding and essential qualities of a worker. - Bhagwad Gita : XVIII-26
