The 40th sutra of the Samadhipada gives the benefit, the result, the effect of the practices which were elucidated in the previous sutra. And the sutra goes like this ..
प॒र॒माणु प॒र॒मम॒ह॒त्त्वान्तोऽस्य व॑शीका॒रः ॥ १.४०॥
Paramāṇu-parama-mahatvānto'sya vaśīkāraḥ ॥ 1.40 ॥
Paramāṇu - parama - mahatva - antaḥasya - vaśīkāraḥ
Paramāṇu is Paramāṇu. Anu is the atom. Paramāṇu smallest atom or smallest particle. And here it is smallest thing. As small as Paramāṇu. From the smallest of the smallest Paramamahatva, Mahatva is the big. Paramamahatva biggest. The biggest of the biggest Paramāṇu. Paramāṇu is smallest of the smallest. Biggest of the biggest Paramamahatva. Antasya to the extreme end. Antaha is extreme. Antasya of this extreme end. Vashīkāra is a very important word. Vashīkāra - A mastery, complete control, total subjugation, absolute obedience Vashīkāraḥ.
So the rough meaning goes like this. The sādhaka gains complete control, mastery Vashīkāra of from Paramāṇu to Paramamahatva. From the smallest of the smallest to the biggest of the biggest. The sādhaka gains mastery over it. His mastery extends from the finest atom to the greatest infinity. Mastery to hold. It's very surprising if you just understand wrongly or just casually if you understand, it suggests that a sādhaka or a yogi or a person in the path of yoga will have mastery, will have complete control, Vashīkāra on everything in this world. From the smallest to the biggest, Everything in this creation, complete Srishti, everything in this world, Everything means, please underline, let us underline everything. It is complete, whether it is the objects whether it is the events, whether it is the physical, geographically, everything in the world which is smallest of the smallest which is the biggest of the biggest will be under the control of the sādhaka and yogi Vashīkāra, this is normally understood meaning but it is not possible as we know.
There may be people, we may hear stories, we have stories, we have incidents events of the great yogis and rishis in our own Puranas and Itihasas. And we may hear and listen many of the events even now, but for all practical purposes, this looks to be almost an impossible. Then how do we understand it, the sutra? The understanding has to be in a more deeper, more clear manner. It is the sādhaka, the yogi gains mastery, Vashīkāra gets complete mastery over his flow of the mind even when it is for meditation on the smallest of the smallest object, event or particle with the same complete control and mastery on the flow of the mind when it is meditating on the biggest of the biggest means on any range the mind will be able to hold that mastery will be coming this is very important dimension. Entering into the subtle, it attains the position of steadiness on the smallest and the subtle dimensions, sukshma vastus, down to the atom and on the other side, entering into the large the position of mental steadiness reaches up to the largest of the large and this great power consists in not being turned back by any chak while running along both these lines. So this is the capacity the sādhaka gains, this is the mastery a sādhaka gains. It is not a physical, biological or geographical or a practical dimension but it is the mastery of the sādhaka which he gains on his own mind, on the flow of the mind - that paramāṇu and paramahatva antasya vashikāraha, he gains that mastery, able to hold the mind on the smallest of the smallest and the state of the mind that is the steadiness of the mind chitta prasādhanam, manasthiti nivandhani that steadiness will be same, that steadiness will be equal irrespective of the whether it is the smallest of the smallest or the largest of the largest. Whether it is paramāṇu or paramahatva that steadiness is same for understanding the quality of steadiness, the depth of steadiness that will be same that is the mastery, that is the vashikāraha. Vashikāraha is complete control, complete absolute mastery. So the ability, the capacity and the stability and the quality does not undergo any change. That is very interesting and most important suggestion and sutra by the Patanjali Maharishi.
And though normally it is understood or said that the yogi gains complete control of anything down from the smallest to the largest. But for all practicality that is an impossible task, that's why we should see this particular sutra in continuity of the earlier sutras and especially just the previous one the 39th sutra that it is the advantage that involving there is no supra normal or super powers and this sutra has that connotation of the mastery to hold his mind steady upon any object or any subject, that is an important understanding which we should get it from the sutra number 40, let us see the next one…
