39th sūtra is another wonderful sūtra. Maharṣi Patañjali's suggestion for the sādhanā, for the manasthiti nibandhanī,
yogaḥ cittavṛttinirodhaḥ and the sūtra is
यथाभिमत॑ध्याना॒द्वा ॥ १.३९॥
Yathābhimata-dhyānād vā ॥ 1.39 ॥
Yathā as suitable as you please, yathā, as you please as suitable to you, as you like, yathā. Abhimata is liking. Dhyāna is the meditation, contemplation, dhyāna, vā of course is the or. Yathā abhimata dhyānad vā that means, after giving so many techniques, Maharṣi Patañjali says, or, vā - through dhyāna, according to your liking, yathā abhimata, abhimata is, as you like, as your liking, as your inkling, as is suitable to you or as you fix is all abhimata, mata and abhimata. It's a very surprising sūtra in which Patañjali expounds proposes that after giving so many techniques as you like, as per your choice of meditation. Means we can choose our own object of meditation, our own method of meditation. But it's not like that we should be very careful because this particular sūtra is a following of the earlier sūtras. So, continuity makes us to interpret and to understand the sūtra as as suitable as you like as given above out of the techniques which are given, what is suitable to you, what is liking to you take up that. Abhimata, abhimata is not the freedom from what is suggested, abhimata is the freedom within the suggestion. It's a very important point to be noted abhimata is not the freedom of choice, freedom of liking, freedom of suitability of outside the prescription. It is within the prescribed techniques which Patañjali has given from that. Yathā, yathā abhimata dhyāna ālambanam vā, dhyāna - that's why many of the teachers, many of the yoga masters, yoga instructors, they propagate and say that we can meditate on anything of our choice. Maharṣi Patañjali prescribes you can choose the object and the system of practice within the purview of what was suggested. Because we are studying and understanding yoga sūtras, yoga darśana. So that choice is not there. Yathā abhimata dhyānadvā, of course for what purpose it is for the citta prasādhanam. Here dhyāna is a technique for citta prasādhanam. It is a methodology but Patañjali has given a freedom whatever is desired by one the same has the form of his methodology. But again as a caution we should remember that this does not mean any wicked object, any bad object or subject but anything good that we like any place, that we like the best, the best suitable, the most suitable, that is the dimension, any scenery, any object but any idea, anything that is helps for the citta prasādhanam. And all these things have come already mentioned in the previous sūtras. So after giving a number of methods for overcoming the conditions of vikṣepa Patañjali concludes this subject by saying that the sādhaka may adopt any method of meditation according to his choice. This should bring home to all sādhakas like us that the practices recommended by Patañjali are a means to a definite end, and that end is citta prasādhanam. And should always be kept in the mind any other method which serves to make the mind steady and one pointed can be adopted, another idea which is implicit in this sūtra is that the method chosen for this purpose it should be in accordance with one's temperament, abhimatam is also means that, in line with our temperament, in line with our inclination, in that way the mind is helped to acquire the habit of one pointedness by natural attraction for the object of citta prasādhanam. So though the sūtra seems to have given full freedom but the freedom is within the purview of the suggestions, techniques given by Maharṣi Patañjali. So let us take care at the same time let us be prudent in our choice and in opting what is suitable, what is our liking, and what is suitable to our temperament, that is the correct meaning to be understood from this wonderful sūtra 39 यथाभिमत॑ध्याना॒द्वा - Yathābhimata-dhyānād vā.
