Mother of All

One day in Jayrambati, Nalini saw the Mother clearing away a dev- otee's dirty plate. She remarked: "My goodness! Aunt, you are clearing away the defiled food of people of all castes!" The Mother calmly replied: "People of all castes are my children." Her love unified the high and low, the rich and poor, regardless of caste.

Swami Vishweswarananda recalled: "One day at Jayrambati after my meal I was about to carry away my dirty plate, but the Mother took my hand and stopped me. She then took the plate herself. I said: 'Why should you do this, Mother? I can wash it.' The Mother replied: 'How little I am doing for you. A child, as you know, soils the lap of the mother and shows its temper tantrums, but the mother calmly does her duty. You are highly cherished even by the gods.

Once in Udbodhan House a woman came to see the Mother with her baby daughter. The baby lay down next to the Mother on her blanket and soiled it. Embarrassed, the baby's mother took the blanket and wanted to wash it, but the Mother took the blanket from her and washed it herself. When the baby's mother objected, the Mother said: "Why should I not wash it? Is she not my own?" Gradually the number of devotees began to increase and sometimes they came to Udbodhan House at odd hours. They would unburden their problems to the Mother and she would guide them. She had very little rest. Observing her inconvenience, one day Golap-ma lovingly reproached her: "Mother, what is the matter with you? You are too lenient. You extend your feet to whomever approaches you and calls you 'Mother." The Mother replied: "What can I do, Golap? As a mother, I cannot withhold myself if someone seeks my help."

Mother - An Ideal for Househoder

As God is neither a monk nor a householder, so Holy Mother was neither a sanyasi nor a householder. She represented both ideals. The most vital things needed to make family life joyful are mutual love and respect, patience and forbearance, detachment and devotion to work, adjustment and forgiveness, selflessness and sympathy, joyfulness and spirituality. These twelve qualities are essential for a happy home. The Mother upheld her household with these qualities, so wherever she lived, peace and joy prevailed.

Holy Mother made people her own with her divine love, compassion, and sweet words. One day at Jayrambati, someone used harsh words when speaking to Surabala. At this, the Mother remarked: "One should not hurt others even with words. One must not speak an unpleasant truth if it is not necessary. By indulging in rude words, one's nature becomes rude. One's sensitivity is lost if one has no control over one's speech." The Master used to say that one should not ask a lame person how he became lame.

One morning in Jayrambati while the Mother was rubbing her body with oil, someone was sweeping the courtyard. After the work was done, that person threw the broomstick aside. At this the Mother said: "What is this? You have thrown away the broomstick with such disrespect when the work is done. It takes the same amount of time to put it gently in a corner as it does to throw it aside. One should not trifle with a thing though it may be very insignificant. If you respect a thing, the thing also respects you. Will you not again need that broomstick? Besides, it is also a part of this family. From that standpoint also, it deserves to be treated with respect. Even a broomstick should be treated with respect. One should perform even an insignificant task with respect."

Ma's Motherhood

Holy Mother's love was so deep and so rare that those who lived with her felt it even in her actions. Once in Jayrambati, Brahmachari Jnana (later Swami Jnanananda) had such a severe case of eczema that he could not feed himself. While he was sick the Mother fed him and then removed his leaf plate for him.

Brahmachari Rasbihari (later Swami Arupananda) was busy with the construction of Holy Mother's new house in Jayrambati. One day he went to a neighboring village to do some errands but did not return before lunch. It was a short winter day. He returned a few hours before evening and heard that the Mother had not had her meal but was instead waiting for his return. He rushed to her and remonstrated: "Mother, your health is not good. Why have you been fasting all this time?" The Mother replied: "My son, how can I eat when you have not yet eaten?" Rasbihari immediately sat for his meal so the Mother and other women devotees could take their food. How many mothers in this world would treat their children this way?
