Dharmabhoomi Bharat

 – Dr. M. Lakshmi Kumari (Yuva Bharati, 50th Year Special Commemorative Volume, Feb. 1988)

"India I loved before I came away. Now, the very dust of India has become holy to me; the very air is now to me holy; it is now the Holy Land, the place of pilgrimage, the Tirtha".

In his reply to the Calcutta address this is how Swami Vivekananda recalled his answer to his English friend on the eve of his departure to India, Dharmabhoomi Bharat, where truth-Satya, has been translated into practical day today life to become the Dharma the norms of perfect harmonious living.

What is that Ultimate Truth-the solidarity, the spiritual oneness of all that is? As Swamiji puts it with such scientific accuracy, everything finite in the universe would find its ultimate rest only when classified into the Infinite. All pervading, transcending the world of apparent realities lies in the Infinite, Eternal, Real essence of existence. No words, no symbols, no forms or names can truly define it.

Having thus understood the Omnipotence, Omniscience, interconnectedness, interrelatedness, interdependence of all that exists, the great seers took all care to relate it in terms of real life. A life where this truth is the basis, or is reflected or recaptured is a life of 'Dharma'. In that scheme, every little bit has its place of honor, has its role to play and above all can exert its influence on all others as well. Magnificent indeed was this conception. The rest of the world had to wait for centuries to learn to understand and comprehend this Truth and its manifestations, through its scientific enquiries in the material world.

A way of life in tune with this Truth, which is fast being accepted as a spiritual scientific fact, having originally evolved in this country, over centuries, got itself identified with the major 'Dharma' or religion of the country - Hinduism! But in truth, this grand vision is part of all religions or rather should become sooner or later part and parcel of every religion and of every right thinking man. In the infiniteness of this Truth there just cannot be any limitations or boundaries, fragmentations or superimpositions.

It alone interpenetrates all aspects of our life and transactions and gives value and dignity to all that exists and to all that we do. It is towards this grand pinnacle of Truth that all human endeavor would wend its way, sooner or later.

"Here and here alone the human heart expanded till it included not only the human, but birds, beasts and plants; from the highest gods to grains of sand, the highest and the lowest, all find a place in the heart of man, grown great, infinite. And here alone, the human soul studies the universe as one unbroken unity whose every pulse was his own pulse", adds Swami Vivekananda.

It is this Dharmic or holistic vision with all its potentialities and possibilities for individual and universal wellbeing that India has proclaimed over and over again, which has made her life and philosophy unique. This Dharma is what we have inherited, which alas we are on the point of losing.

We are the children of such a Dharmabhoomi. We have to prove to the world that we are heirs of this grand vision. For this, we must understand the - Dharma of this beloved Dharmabhoomi and re-establish that Dharma in our lives through our Sacrifice and Service.
