Missionary organisation

|| योग: कर्मसु कौशलम् ||

Mananeeya Eknathji further tells us how our missionary organisation is different from others. He says :

It is a total and permanent involvement and surrender; it is neither partial nor temporary. Such other constituents also become his friends and they are bound together. But it is the cause that binds them and it is the supreme factor. He is their fellow, comrade no doubt, but this comradeship is not for any other cause, but only for furthering the aims of the organization. And thus, they are colleagues and friends, but first they are the constituents of the organization and then friends. Their mutual love is far more intense than ordinary affection and attachment. They take care of each other and they look to the convenience and welfare mutually, but this also, so far as it does not interfere with the achievements of the goal. Reaching the object is more important and not faltering in-between, only to look to the good of the comrade. The utmost care of a wounded or exhausted comrade will, no doubt, be taken but if the goal ahead is more important or the target reaching is more urgent, then the friend may be left behind, unwillingly though, but the duty must be first done. They will move hand-in-hand and can help if one of them slips down, because they are co-pilgrims to the same destination and they are also wedded to the same object. They try to reach the goal, because they receive the inspiration, directive from the goal itself. In this respect, in this particular aspect, the missionary organization is quite the antithesis of the trade unions.

Capacity : Vivekananda Kendra News

"An Organisation is a combination of powers of individuals. It is not '10 + 10'= 20, it is '10 x 10' = 100. But if the organisation is well knit and has a mutual trust, then the capacity to give becomes 10 to the power of 10 which means 10,00,00,00,000 (1000 crores). Thus, if we are organised, our capacity to give increases a million fold."

One with Swamiji

|| योग: कर्मसु कौशलम् ||

Mananeeya Eknathji's whole life was all dedicated to the cause for which he worked. Everything of the work he had become. In 'Eknathji' there is a very beautiful memoir of Eknathji :

In 1980, when Eknathji was sick and had almost lost his memory, Thangaswami placed in front of Eknathji various photographs including his and asked him to pick up his own. Eknathji peered at the photographs for some time and then picked up the photo of Swami Vivekananda in standing posture painted by Sri S. M. Pandit. He became very emotional seeing that photo. He told, "It is my photo". He had worked very hard to get that portrait of Swami Vivekananda. He must have thought of it so much that he remembered nothing else but this. There is an Abhanga of Sant Sri Jnaneshwar "Darpani paahata roopa na dise ho aapule, Bap Rakhumaadevivare maja aise kele" - 'When I went to see me in the mirror, I could not see me. Rukmini's Eswara (Vithala) has done like this to me'. Eknathji had become so much one with his work that his self-identity was totally lost.
When he was given 'Kendra Bharati' to read Eknathji went through it for some time and identified the word "Kanyakumari" and also recognised his facsimile signature in the magazine.

Identify totally with Organisation

|| योग: कर्मसु कौशलम् ||

Mananeeya Eknathji's says that the worker when identifies himself totally with the organization; total surrender; no personal life remains for him.
The worker puts his heart and soul into the work and his whole life is dedicated to the organization. He so completely identifies himself with the organization that he has no separate existence and goal apart from it. He himself is organization and the work of the organization is his work, and his duty of service is the objective of the organization. He merges himself in the organization and the most insignificant segment of his life is utilized for the extra-organizational work. His entire life is involved. Other people become the members of the organization and just partially devote their time, as and when possible, to the organization. The worker is not a member but he is the very core of the organization. He has no personal life as such. All his life, time, powers, possessions, etc. belong to the organization.

In the life of Eknathji we find this aspect. He had become one with the Kendra, the Swami Vivekananda, the Kendra Prarthana and all. When Eknathji was sick in 1980, he was in Delhi. Sri Thangaswami who was working with him as his personal assistant had gone home for writing exam. On return, he was with Eknathji. One day in the evening, he chanted Kendra Prarthana with him. While chanting, he deliberately made a mistake; immediately Eknathji corrected him. Though sick, though there was loss of memory, he was one with the Kendra Prarthana. From that day onwards, Eknathji chanted Kendra Prarthana regularly with all those who would be there present with him at the Prarthana time.

Keep giving

|| योग: कर्मसु कौशलम् ||

Mananeeya Eknathji's asks us to give like cloud.

The constituent of a missionary organization knows only absolute giving. He gives whatever he possesses without the least reservation and his hunger for giving grows more. At this time, his potentialities manifest themselves in earning and acquiring more, like the cloud which freely distributes what it receives.

Addanam hi visargaya satam varimuchamiva
The more he acquires, the more he gives and the more he gives, the more his hunger for giving increases. He offers whatever he earns, at the altar of the mission and feels happy that he is of some service to others. If he cannot give more, he feels dejected at heart.

further Eknathji quotes Taittariya Upanishad and tells : A dedicated worker is not happy and satisfied unless he has fulfilled the requirements of the people whom he desires to serve. There is always a craving in the heart to give more. In this, he unconsciously follows the directive of the Taittiriyopanishad where the preceptor exhorts his disciple.

Shriya Deyam, Bhiya Deyam Rhiya Deyam - Taittariya Upanishad Shikshavalli
"Give according to your wealth. Give with fear (that people will laugh at you if you do not give adequately). Give with shyness (that you can give this much only when more is to be given)". Thus feeling bashful for his petty service, he puts in supreme efforts to acquire what he does not possesses. He acquires and utilizes the same and then he feels happy that he could do something within his limitations. If he lacks certain quality to serve the people adequately and efficiently, he exerts rigorously to acquire that and becomes more useful. Any emotion, temperament, aptitude is wanting in him, he gets it, transforms himself and offers his services in the best possible way.

Think of Duties alone

|| योग: कर्मसु कौशलम् ||

Mananeeya Eknathji's this message of Jeevane Yavadadanam Syat Pradanam Tato'dhikam is very important. He further puts to us all that in missionary organization there are only duties and no thoughts of rights.

Ordinarily, in life, we find that the duties also carry their corresponding rights with them. But in missionary service, it is the absolute duty only and that too pertaining to others and nothing of the self. Such selfless duty we see in the mother's affection for her child. It is a continuous process of absolute giving, and in no case, at any time, for even the trifling returns. The patriot's love and duty for his motherland belongs to that category only. The patriot offers everything, even his life at the altar of the motherland and expects no return. The patriot makes sacrifices for his motherland and there the matter ends.

The constituent of a missionary organization knows only absolute giving. He gives whatever he possesses without the least reservation and his hunger for giving grows more. At this time, his potentialities manifest themselves in earning and acquiring more, like the cloud which freely distributes what it receives.

On the auspicious day of Devashayani Ekadashi we all need to ponder on this thought. For four months Gods would be sleeping leaving the world to human beings. Man, awakening the God in him, seeing God everywhere, following the way God takes care of everything and everybody, has to take care of the creation. For arousing goodness and it to become a habit, next four months, these thoughts would be very important. Let's work on it!

Give n forget your giving

|| योग: कर्मसु कौशलम् ||

Mananeeya Eknathji through Kendra Prarthana gives the message of Kendra work and that is keep giving more and more through organised efforts. Eknathji guides us :

How the capacity of giving comes? By giving. The tenacity is also important in giving. Pradanam indicates that too. If the giving is with all ego of giving them it is not entitled as Pradanam. Because then the giving will be in lieu of ego-satisfaction. For giving to be Pradanam it has to be without even being conscious of giving, without knowing you are a giver. Give and forget your giving. But it is very difficult to practice. If an all-flowing love is there, then there is no limit to giving. Mother gives to the child limitless love. There is no account keeping. As the organisation increases its capacity to give, it also helps its workers in giving more without ego. The organisation removes the identity of the giver. An easy method of giver-less giving is  that of giving through organisation. Nameless, fameless way of giving is through organisation. Though hundreds of workers work for some service project, the name is only of Vivekananda Kendra and not of any individual worker. For that, great dedication and surrender is needed. If some worker begins to assert even his due role, place and contribution in the organisation, the organisation is hurt. Once the organisation is hurt, our capacity of Pradanam comes down. Thus, this line - 'Jeevane yavadadam syat pradanam tato'dhikam' has a very deep and extensive meaning needed for the total development of a worker.

Pradanam tato'dhikam

|| योग: कर्मसु कौशलम् ||

Mananeeya Eknathji through Kendra Prarthana tells us Jeevane Yavadadanam syat pradanam tato'dhikam... keep giving more and more as that is what is needed.
We also receive hurts, humiliations, abuses and develop  indifference in life. We should not give back more of these to the society. To avoid such interpretations, in this line, the choice of words is very important. The word used for what we receive is Adanam and the word used for giving far more is Pradanam Tato'dhikam. The word is not Adhikam danam but the word used is Pradanam which means Prakarsena danam – generously giving. It means our heart should be such a mechanism that all that is negative when received is transformed, purified and multiplied and then given back to the society. Nature is like that. It receives all rotten, thrown materials and turns them into manure. The cow eats dry grass but gives us wholesome milk. Thus it is a great principle that needs to be followed in life. Whatever positive we receive, we should give far more than that to the society. Whatever negative we receive, we should transform that into positive and then give to the society. The pain of hurts and humiliation that we undergo should not reflect in our behaviour. It should also not sour our relationship with others, nor should it cast its shadow on our work. Only those who have confidence in their divinity can be like that. It is like Siva – Nilakantha. He drank the poison to save the world. But He also did not allow the poison to affect Him and so the poison remained in the throat.

Organisation's capacity

|| योग: कर्मसु कौशलम् ||

Mananeeya Eknathji through Kendra Prarthana further guides us as as to how the capacity of organisation to give more and more is greater than the individual. It provides a new outlook and we should definitely work on it.

Times are such that for an individual giving more than what he receives is inadequate. Organisation is needed for giving more. An Organisation is a combination of powers of individuals. It is not '10 + 10'= 20, it is '10 x 10' = 100. But if the organisation is well knit and has a mutual trust, then the capacity to give becomes 10 to the power of 10 which means 10,00,00,00,000 (1000 crores). Thus, if we are organised, our capacity to give increases a million fold. If there is no mutual trust in organisation then 10 persons may even cancel each other, as one may try to pull down the other, with the result no body will be able to give. Effective organistion is the technique to achieve the capacity to give more. Therefore, this line also stresses the importance of doing organised work. If at any time there is any difficulty in the organisation,  it affects the capacity to give, even of those who are not at fault.

Giving is Sadhana

|| योग: कर्मसु कौशलम् ||

Mananeeya Eknathji through Kendra Prarthana further guides us on giving more and more through our organisation.

No one can say that I do not receive anything and so there is no question of giving. The very fact that one is alive shows he is receiving from Nature and the society the very existence shows with certainty that one is receiving. Certain minimum things we have to take from the society if we have to live. Therefore the Runa concept is there in our culture, that we owe to our parents, society, Nature, Rushis, etc. as we take from them. Panca Yajna thus formalises as well as traditionalizes the life of giving. Those who have really chosen giving as life,  for them giving becomes life.

If we can give more, our capacity to take also increases. For example, the more fully we breathe out, the more air we can take in. The more we are giving, the more nurturing of our existence takes place at physical, mental and intellectual levels. If we go on giving, then eternal replenishment takes place. But if the giving is stopped then stagnation takes place. Thus this rule of 'Sata haste Samahara, Sahasra Haste Sankira', is for our own development. It is said that if we keep giving to the society then the Tapaswis give their Tapas to us. No other extra penance needs to be done. Thus the service of giving to others itself becomes a Sadhana.

VK is to give more n more

|| योग: कर्मसु कौशलम् ||

Mananeeya Eknathji says each one should give more than what has been received from the society. As said in the Kendra Prarthana, it is because :
This is the basis of spiritual morality and spiritual economics. A man receives love, facilities, knowledge, food, co-operation and a sense of security, etc. from the society around him but if he returns a little less to the society, the whole society loses a little. For the society, the love and the facilities bestowed on him, becomes a losing proposition and an unprofitable investment. Slowly the society gets so impoverished that it cannot take care of the physical, mental and spiritual well being of people. If we want to have a sustainable social order in which all are taken care of including the old, children and the infirm, then the principle has to be 'Give far more than you receive.'

Giving far more than we receive does not mean that we should receive less specially when it comes to mental, intellectual and spiritual inputs. The Vedas say Sata Haste Samahara, Sahasra Haste Sankira – receive with a hundred hands and distribute with a thousand hands. We should absorb, accept, internalise and learn as much as we can. We must nurture our body, mind and intellect as well as can.  but we should give much more than we receive. Only then the society will be an affluent society; a society of surplus, and naturally capable of caring more its constituents at material, mental, intellectual and spiritual levels. Mother earth receives one grain and gives so many grains so that all can live.

Jeevane yavadadanam....

|| योग: कर्मसु कौशलम् ||

Mananeeya Eknathji through Kendra Prarthana brings to our mind this important aspect of ours is only to give and give and to give more and more through Jeevane Yavadadam Syat Pradanam Tatodhikam

Shri Eknathjhi, always used to say that our life should not become a story of maintenance. Suppose a car owner maintains the car regularly but if he does not use it for fear of its getting damaged, then the car is of no use. A horse is well fed, groomed and kept in trim condition so that it may gallop and carry the rider well. But if the horse is not put to use then the horse, which is only maintained, becomes useless and hence purposeless. Similarly, the whole life should not be just for maintaining ourselves. Our body should be a fit instrument for the soul to progress by serving the society. Mananeeya Eknathji says in 'Sadahana of Service', one must be in a position to say at the last breath, "I have not lived in vain. I have given much more than I have received. There is no liability on me. On the contrary, I have assets to my credit."

Give more n more

|| योग: कर्मसु कौशलम् ||

Mananeeya Eknathji further says that even after giving everything one is bashful that of not being able to give more and strives to give more as that is what is an act of service. Here the very attitude is different, the view point is different. Eknathji guides all saying :

Even for becoming a member of any institution or organization, the query is "What are the benefits that one can derive by being a member?" But here there are no benefits for whatever one offers.
One may surrender everything that one possesses; still one does not expect any return whatsoever. On the contrary, one is bashful or feels dejected that one can give only this much that one possesses, when there is a need to give more. With the maximum giving one is still unhappy that one is not in a position or is not able to satisfy the requirement of the people. And this discontent, of course a noble discontent, urges one to utilize all one's potentialities and to find new avenues from where one can acquire more, just only for giving more. Such giving is an absolute giving, and not a relative giving.

Ours is to take up Duty

|| योग: कर्मसु कौशलम् ||

Mananeeya Eknathji now brings us to the different classifications of the Organisations and in that what are the characteristics of a Missionary Organisation is explained by him. Very specifically, he says there are three characteristics of a missionary organization.
The first one is
The worldly transactions are based on give and take. But in a missionary organization there is total surrendering of all that the constituents possess without expecting anything in return. There is only thought of duty and not of rights.

Eknathji further says : Ours is a cadre-based organization in which the dedicated lifeworkers and the whole-timers form the very backbone of the organization. A second outstanding feature of the Kendra is that it is a missionary organization. In such an organization the accent is on the total surrendering by the constituents of whatever they possess, may be wealth, knowledge, power, and other multifarious energies. The worldly transactions are based on a give-and-take system. Everything that is given is expected to bring back the corresponding approximate returns. There is nothing like an absolute giving. The teacher teaches but expects remuneration at the end of the month. The doctor treats patients and the pleader gives legal advice but none without taking fees. In a missionary organization, there is nothing like "returns". The word does not exist in its dictionary. Thus, it is an unadulterated giving which is not found in other organizations.

Where-When-What thru Letters

|| योग: कर्मसु कौशलम् ||

Mananeeya Eknathji always used Where-When-What to talk and especially during the construction of Vivekananda Rock Memorial phase we find umpteen examples of the same. In one of the letter re. budget he cautions the people in the office not to raise the point at this juncture. His letter on the point is really wonderful. He writes :

02-08-1966

Dear Shri R.N. Venkataraman,

Saprema Namaskar.

Received your letter dated 29th July, together with enclosures.

There is, no doubt, an urgent necessity of preparing a detailed estimate, and rearranging, if necessary, all the items of expenditure under proper heads and sub-heads. We should, therefore, start the work immediately with the help of some expert. But, I do not think that the whole work could be accomplished to our satisfaction within the prescribed period of a month, i.e. before the General Body meeting. Whomsoever you may select for this job, he has to consult our Sthapathi also in the matter.

It may also be necessary to revise the estimate-not only on account of rising prices but also due to many other factors. But, we should do it a little later. The made of transport of the stone to the Rock island is yet to be finalized. Even the jetty construction work is still having fire and we do not know how much more financial burden we shall have to bear on that account. The stage, therefore, has yet to come when we shall be able to form a fairly correct idea about the estimate of the ultimate cost.

In any case I do not consider it possible or even desirable to discuss the matter in the ensuing General Body meeting. The report of the General Body meeting is to be subsequently sent to the members all over the country. I do not think it wise to spread an unnecessary scare among our workers all over the country about a possible rise in our present estimate which is considered already heavy, by bringing the subject for discussion in the meeting. If, after properly collecting all the necessary date and calculating the costs on its basis, at a later date, any increase in the present estimate is considered unavoidable we shall certainly apprise all our workers of the same at that stage. My personal feeling is, other things being equal, our estimate is not likely to rise on account of rising prices. We had already kept a margin for such a probable rise in prices, while preparing the budget. I, therefore, feel that neither should we include the subject in the agenda nor should we think of bringing it for discussion in the ensuing General Body meeting. If found necessary, we can bring the subject in the General Body Meeting of 1967.

Please convey my respectful Pranams to all elders.

Yours affectionately,

Eknath Ranade.
