First I approached all the leaders. Shri Raghunath Singh, M.P. from Banaras was a top man - top brass - in the Congress then. He was the Secretary of the Congress Parliamentary Party. I used to visit his house every other day and talk to him about what all happened. One day I broke this subject and said : "I think a petition should be addressed to Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru". He said, "Yes. Mine will be the first signature". I said, "Very well". So on 23rd morning at six I went to his house with all the forms. He asked, "What made you come so early?"
I said. "That petition we are going to present to the Prime Minister. So your first signature. I have to start the work today".
"Oh! you have prepared everything. Time has come; Yes, Yes." And he put his signature. Mind you, he is the Secretary of the Congress Parliamentary Party and that first signature had the effect. When I showed that signature, immediately all Congress people signed saying, "Oh Shri Raghunath Singh has signed". In that Central Hall I collected 90 signatures within an hour. The signatures of all top Congressmen.
