19 Feb 1897 : The steamer docked at Budge, and the Swami Vivekananda and his party arrived by train in Calcutta. Unprecedented enthusiasm prevailed in Calcutta on Friday, 19 February 1897, the day of Swami Vivekananda’s arrival at Sealdah station. From early daybreak, people were pouring into the eastern platform, where the train was to arrive and by 7.30 a.m., its due time, a crowd of some 20,000 persons had collected on it and the adjoining ground as also the roads and streets all-round the station, to honour the Swami and give him a hearty reception....A triumphal arch, having a nahabatkhana on top, was erected in Circular Road immediately outside the station premises, having the words, “Hail, Swamiji”. Another arch, displaying the words “Jai Ramakrishna”, spanned Harrison Road, and a third arch having the word “Welcome” on it was erected in front of Ripon College...Punctual to time, the special steamed in and the

Immediately there was a great rush, everybody being anxious to get near to him and take the dust of his feet and people could with difficulty keep theirplaces. As the Swami alighted on the platform, Mr. Narendra Nath Sen, followed by other members of the Reception Committee, welcomed the Swami and placed a garland of
flowers round his neck....“After his glorious career in the West, he came and met his mother. With his head or her lap, with all the pranks and helplessness of a child, he cried, `Mother, feed me with thine hands and make me grow.’'
