Lokasamskara

|| योग: कर्मसु कौशलम् ||

The need of Lokasamskara in this vast country with so much of variety is to make people of one mind. Swami Vivekananda in his address at Madras on 'Future of India'
had said For the next fifty years this alone shall be our keynote -- this, our great Mother India. Let all other vain gods disappear for the time from our minds. This is the only god that is awake, our own race --"everywhere his hands, everywhere his feet, everywhere his ears, he covers everything." All other gods are sleeping. What vain gods shall we go after and yet cannot worship the god that we see all round us, the Virat? When we have worshipped this, we shall be able to worship all the other gods.

This is the key point of Lokasamskar. With this we shall have discipline and solidarity in all. Strength and Unity,  Self Respect and Self Reliance, National Pride and National Interest should be uppermost in the minds of each one and especially of Karyakartas. And all efforts are to be training to this effect.

Mananeeya Eknathji wanted all of us to have this aspect in Lokasamskar which will cultivate in us National as well Personal Character and with that the organised minds.

"The people who liked the organisation, felt that they should take up work in the organisation and have come through the earlier two steps of Chatussutri - Loksamparka & Loksamgraha - are to be given training so that they would realize that they are one of Swamiji's hundred thousand and then, with that support, mental make up they shall go over the length & breadth of the land spreading the thought of Swami Vivekananda of Bharatmata - the Jagat Guru."

Lokasamskar

|| योग: कर्मसु कौशलम् ||
It is very interesting to see how important is National Character. Here is a small story from our History:

The Raja Karna of Gujarat had a Prime Minister who was a great scholar of Vedas and also well-versed in various arts and sciences. Once the King, in a moment of weakness, abducted the wife of one of his sardars. At this the Prime Minister was beside himself with rage and took a vow to punish the King for that sin. He felt that all his powers of piety and religious learning were challenged. What was the course he adopted to fulfil his vow? He knew that the Muslim armies were poised on the northern border of Gujarat. Prior to that, they had made several abortive attempts to over-run and subjugate Gujarat. The Prime Minister directly went to the Muslim Sultan at Delhi and sought his help to punish his King for the sin he had committed. The enemy was only too glad to snatch that golden opportunity. Equipped with the valuable information revealed by the Prime Minister, who knew all the secrets of the defences of his kingdom, the enemy marched on Gujarat. And the powerful Hindu outpost of Karnavati, which had so far effectively checked the Muslim expansion into the South, fell. Thereafter, not only Gujarat, but, the whole of South lay prostrate at the feet of Muslim marauders. What did Prime Minister gain after all? Doubtless, the King was killed, but along with him thousands of the Prime Minister's own kith and kin were put to sword. Countless women were molested before his eyes, temples razed to the ground and his own residence where he used to recite Vedas and worship God turned into a slaughter-house of cows; in addition, a vast portion of our motherland was reduced to slavery for centuries to come!

We can see, that, on the one hand, the King was loose in his personal character, but, strong in the national aspect, and, on the other hand, the Prime Minister was personally full of piety, of God-fearing nature and all that, but devoid of national character which enables a man to judge the ultimate well-being of the nation as a whole and urges him to sacrifice his all including his personal notions of righteousness at the altar of his nation's well-being. Thus both the King and Prime Minister became responsible for bringing about such a great disaster to a cause which both of them cherished.

A worker has to take care of both the personal as well national character as that alone will enable him to take up the work in the society and Bharatmata to be the Jagadguru.

Lokasamskar

|| योग: कर्मसु कौशलम् ||

In Lokasamskar, one needs to look for the National Character of the people. The personal character should be unblemish, no doubt about it. But, the National Character is equally important and should be given priority in the training of the Karyakartas. Param Poojaneeya Guruji says in Bunch of Thoughts :
Our jawans have in these few days smashed the myth assiduously built up by the British, and believed by the world and by many of our own countrymen, that we are a meek and weak lot who have always been at the mercy of any and every freebooter who chose to trample upon us. It was this myth that made even Gandhiji remark,"An average Hindu is a coward and an average Muslim is a bully." However, facts are otherwise. The bully is invariable a coward at heart. It is only when he finds the circumstances safe that he indulges in savage brutalities. To a Hindu, however, the ideal is Vajradapi kathorani, mruduni kusumadapi. He is softer than a petal in promoting brotherliness and amicable friendship, but can become harder than a diamond when the other person turns down his hand of fraternity and prepares to strike him. In fact, no society, which could give birth to a Rama, a Krishna, a Pratap, a Shivaji and a Ranjit Singh could be considered as anything but virile and valiant. A distorted presentation of our national history depicting all such great national heroes as either mythological or as only local chieftains and naming only some sections of our people as martial races had so far misrepresented the true heroic ring of our national character. Our valiant jawans have given the lie direct to that mischievous propaganda and proved that every son of the soil inherits the blood of those peerless ancestors. They have projected before the world the real mighty image of Bharat Mata with Her millions of arms raised to strike down evil forces on the face of the earth.

In the country, there had been quite a number of pious and well-meaning persons in our land. In spite of that, we have had to face disasters continuously over the last thousand years. Some have even gone to the length of asserting that it was this too much of personal goodness that landed our nation in troubles. But it is not a correct reading of history. The real reason was that we lacked in national character - the essential counterpart of personal character. We are not mere solitary individuals but are indivisible parts of the whole society. In that relationship also we should express and uphold purity of character. If this aspect is ignored, mere piety and goodness of the individual will be of little avail in the cause of the nation. Not merely that; if society does not survive, the individual goodness and character also will be trampled under the feet of barbaric aggressors. And that is what has happened in the past.
We all have to make therefore efforts to have personal character as well national character strong in us.

Lokasamskar

|| योग: कर्मसु कौशलम् ||

Mananeeya Eknathji expected total samarpan - dedication - for the cause of Swami Vivekananda. And, so quoting Swamiji's words in 'Vivekananda's Rousing Call to the Hindu Nation' he places the ideal of Mahavira Hanuman in front of the karyakartas.

You have now to make the character of Mahavira your ideal. See how at the command of Ramachandra he crossed the ocean. He had no care for life or death! He was a perfect master of his senses and wonderfully sagacious. You have now to build your life on this great ideal of personal service. Through that, all the other ideals will gradually manifest in life. Obedience to the Guru without questioning, and strict obedience of Brahmacharya – this is the secret of success. As on the one hand Hanuman represents the ideal of service, so on the other he represents the leonine courage, striking the whole world with awe. He has not the least hesitation in sacrificing his life for the good of Rama. A supreme indifference to everything except the service of Rama, even to the attainment of the status of Brahman or Shiva, the great World-Gods!

Only the carrying out of Shri Rama's behest is the one vow of his life! Such whole-hearted devotion is wanted.

As Hanuman dedicated himself to Sri Ram so also, let each karyakarta dedicate himself to Organisation in the form of Sri Ram.

Lokasamskar

|| योग: कर्मसु कौशलम् ||

Training of workers and mouding them to the needs of the organisation is very important. Having filled the brain with higher ideals, taken up the thought, it need to be made part of the whole body. It should sink in the body at all level - physical, mental, emotional, intellectual. And for that Swami Vivekananda suggests to be like the pearl oyster. Let's know what it means in the words of Swamiji :

Be like the pearl oyster. There is a pretty Indian fable to the effect that if it rains when the star Svâti is in the ascendant, and a drop of rain falls into an oyster, that drop becomes a pearl. The oysters know this, so they come to the surface when that star shines, and wait to catch the precious raindrop. When a drop falls into them, quickly the oysters close their shells and dive down to the bottom of the sea, there to patiently develop the drop into the pearl.

We should be like that. First hear, then understand, and then, leaving all distractions, shut your minds to outside influences, and devote yourselves to developing the truth within you. There is the danger of frittering away your energies by taking up an idea only for its novelty, and then giving it up for another that is newer. Take one thing up and do it, and see the end of it, and before you have seen the end, do not give it up. He who can become mad with an idea, he alone sees light. Those that only take a nibble here and a nibble there will never attain anything. They may titillate their nerves for a moment, but there it will end.

….Take up one idea. Make that one idea your life think of it, dream of it, live on that idea. Let the brain, muscles, nerves, every part of your body, be full of that idea, and just leave every other idea alone. This is the way to success, and this is the way great spiritual giants are produced. Others are mere talking machines.

…To succeed, you must have tremendous perseverance, tremendous will. "I will drink the ocean," says the persevering soul, "at my Will Mountains will crumble up." Have that sort of energy, that sort of will, work hard, and you will reach the goal.

Lokasamskar

|| योग: कर्मसु कौशलम् ||

Lokasamskara is an important aspect of creating organised minds and hence, it needs to be looked into in a special way.
Mananeeya Eknathji perhaps caught up the idea of formation of Viveknanada Kendra from Swami Vivekananda's letter to Sri Alasinga Perumal where Swamiji has written : A hundred thousand men and women, fired with the zeal of holiness, fortified with eternal faith in the Lord, and nerved to lion's courage by their sympathy for the poor and the fallen and the downtrodden, will go over the length and breadth of the land, preaching the gospel of salvation, the gospel of help, the gospel of social raising-up -the gospel of equality.
The people who liked the organisation, felt that they should take up work in the organisation and have come through the earlier two steps of Chatussutri - Loksamparka & Loksamgraha - are to be given training so that they would realize that they are one of Swamiji's hundred thousand and then, with that support, mental make up they shall go over the length & breadth of the land spreading the thought of Swami Vivekananda of Bharatmata - the Jagat Guru.

We shall see, some values which Swamiji himself had suggested to be in the making of such karyakartas. He says :

Fill the brain and the heart with high ideal

Little manifestation of energy through the muscles are called work. But where there is no thought, there will be no work. Fill the brain, therefore, with high thoughts, highest ideals, place them day and night before you and out of that will come great work.

Everyone can see the sky, even the very worm crawling upon the earth sees the blue sky, but how very far away it is! So it is with our ideal. It is far away, no doubt, but at the same time, we know that we must have it. We must even have the highest ideal. Unfortunately in this life, the vast majority of persons are groping through this dark life without any ideal at all. If a man with an ideal makes a thousand mistakes, I am sure that the man without an ideal makes fifty thousand. Therefore, it is better to have an ideal. And this ideal we must hear about as much as we can, till it enters into our hearts, into our brains, into our very veins, until it tingles in every drop of our blood and permeates every pore in our body. We must meditate upon it. "Out of the fullness of the heart the mouth speaketh," and out of the fullness of the heart the hand works too.

Lokasamskara

|| योग: कर्मसु कौशलम् ||

There are karyakartas needed for carrying out the purpose of the organisation. They are there in the society but need to searched and found out. In Lokasamparka, such people are found out. In Lokasamgraha, they are brought close to the organisation. The enthusiasm in them to participate in the fulfilment of the objectives of the organisation on all three levels of Tan, Man and Dhan is created and sustained. However, they are raw. Enthusiasm need to be supported with the skill of doing the things, carrying out the objectives and therefore, Eknathji gives stress on Lokasamskara. This is equally an important step in the making of a Karyakarta. Eknathji says :

It may happen that the people in their enthusiasm may be ready to carry out any small piece of work, but they may not possess the skill and sometimes the technique of such a work. Possibly small mistakes or flaws may also creep in. But one has to be very careful and has to see that the things are handled properly and the self respect of every person is properly looked into. People have to be properly trained and equipped for the particular programme suited to the aims and objects of the organization. This sort of equipment varies from organization to organization and getting the followers properly equipped for a mission is called Lokasamskara (The equipping of the people). They have to be suitably qualified and moulded in pursuance of the mission undertaken.

Lokasamgraha per Bhagavad Gita

|| योग: कर्मसु कौशलम् ||

Lord Krishna tells Arjuna that you need to do the work for Lokasamgraha. In 3.20, Lord says : Lokasamgrahamevartham sampashyan kartum arhasi.
A human being does work for many causes. He does it as he is living, as he needs to fulfill his desires, for purification of mind, etc. He also needs to do the work to protect the people who go in an unbecoming way.
The elders and buddhiman people in the society need to place the ideals in front of the people so that they will know how to behave in a society, how to follow the path of Truth, how to follow the path of Dharma in the life.
Normal people become victim of the circumstances as they have no control on mind. The wavering mind keeps demanding many things and the whole life goes in satisfying the mind full of sense subjects. There is need to protect such people also and that is possible only by placing ideals in front of them. Lord says, Janaka - the king was so busy in taking care of the whole kingdom still he had attained the mukti by doing the work. And the work that he undertook was the protection of people who have fallen from their Dharma. They need to be given proper support, make them understand the path of Shreyas and that needs one to remain busy.
So, according to Bhagavad Gita, Lokasamgraha is not allowing people to fall from the path of Dharma, of Duty, of Truth.

Lokasangraha

|| योग: कर्मसु कौशलम् ||

Mananeeya Eknathji was master in the skill of organising the people for the cause of Swami Vivekananda and Bharatmata. In 'Eknathji' Niveditadidi writes :
Eknathji successfully created an atmosphere in the country, for supporting the Rock Memorial. So much so, that he could subtly 'persuade' the State Governments to donate Rs. one lakh each for the Memorial. How did he do that?
One gets a glimpse by reading his letters. The Lokasamgrahak in him was illustrated when in one of his letters he was asking the name of the photographer he had met in the function.
His congratulatory remarks to the newly married person carried poetic expression like, "I am sure the world must have been appearing doubly fine to you with an additional pair of eyes".
Eknathji would awaken the support for the memorial in the hearts of apparent opponents by his proper use of words. Eknathji would write- 'I came to expedite your decision' and not that he went there to persuade them, 'I came to report about the work of the Memorial', implying that the man addressed was interested and Eknathji was just executing his wishes.

Lokasamgraha

|| योग: कर्मसु कौशलम् ||
People came in contact. The vision of the organisation is shared with them. They too start feeling that they should go, participate in the activities of the organisation and see how exactly the things are. And that is how, organising people gets started which is called Lokasamgraha. Mananeeya Eknathji's Organisational Chatussutri has Lokasamgraha as the second link in the chain. Eknathji says :
As you go on spreading thought in people around you, you find that there are a number of people who are ready to support you. If you come still closer in contact with them, you find that they are fascinated by the thought and are prepared to employ whatever energies they possess for the fulfillment of the idea given to them. People simply rush to you, asking for some active work and intense participation; one has to assign work to everybody according to his capacity and aptitude having regard to the need of the hour. Everybody must feel that he is also contributing his mite to the great cause and that nobody is a useless person. This organization of the people is the skill of Lokasamgraha (The collection of the people). No person is unwanted in the huge task.
Ayogya: Purusha: nasti.
The important points in it that we need to keep in mind are :
    Spread thought
    Look for those who take up the thought
    See their urge to take up the work
    Ascertain the energies they have
    Assign proper work
    Assign work properly
    Let each one feel that one should keep contributing more and more
    None is useless
    Each one has a place in organisation.

Suniyojit Samparka

|| योग: कर्मसु कौशलम् ||

Here is an experience of Suniyojit Samparka by Sujatha Didi, Telugu Prant Sanghatak:
Last month I had been to Shanthi Ashram, Andhra Pradesh. Time to time I go there and meet Swamini Mataji of that Ashram. In one of our talk Mataji had said that she had been to Vivekananda Rock Memorial at Kanyakumari. Keeping that in mind, a few months ago,  I had given  her the first Vivekananda Kendra's Telugu Prachurana Vibhagamu publication, Shila Smaaraka Kathaa [The Story of the Vivekananda Rock Memorial]. Recently when I had gone to meet her again, the inmates surrounded me and narrated the following experience.

Mataji is in her 80's and profoundly active and radiates joy. The inmates had gone to seek her blessings. Mataji said "Blessings are always there. What makes them effective is hard work. Just look at the grand Vivekananda Rock Memorial at Kanyakumari that Eknathji built. He left no stone unturned to bring the whole country together to achieve it. What hard work, what tremendous commitment! Put in that kind of hard work and blessings will materialise".

She had read the book and said simply, "It is a very good book".

But now, to all she gives that book for reading and tells them that they should go and visit Vivekananda Rock Memorial. She has told the inmates about the activities of Vivekananda Kendra and thus, by having samparka with her, the whole Ashram has become a place for the Kendra workers and Kendra work.

In fact, all of you would have lot of experiences of the type. The need is to pen it. Will u please?

Suniyojit Samparka

|| योग: कर्मसु कौशलम् ||
The right person at right place is all needed to bring results. Mananeeya Eknathji used to wait till the right person  whom he wanted gives ok. During collection campaign for Vivekananda Rock Memorial, the formation of committee in Maharashtra shows Eknathji's unique approach in Suniyojit Samparka. In his own words :

We had not formed a Committee in Maharashtra for full six months. The people were saying : "Well, as you are starting the collection campaign, you form a Committee early; otherwise there will be difficulties. Time is ripe. Don't delay". But then, I wanted Shri S.K. Patil, the then Railway Minister, to be the President. Till he agreed to it, I did not want to form a Committee. How to make him accept it? Who is his friend? Shri Sawant. How to approach him? Another gentleman is a friend of Shri Sawant. Who is the friend of that person? In this way I started from A to B to go to C and through him to D. It took six months. Ultimately Shri S.K Patil became the President. When approached, Shri V.P. Naik said: "If Shri Patil becomes President, I will be Vice-President". Shri Naik thought that Shri Patil was not likely to agree.

But when he became President, Shri Naik automatically agreed to become the Vice-President. Shri Sawant, Shri Chaudhuri and many other important persons also joined and a Committee was formed. Not in a hurry. Full six months we took, to get one man after another on whom our eyes were set!
